
Keun® is a web based modern variant of the Usagi OMOP CDM mapping tool.
Objective
The OHDSI team has created a software tool named Usagi to assist users in mapping codes from a source system into the standard terminologies stored in OMOP vocabulary.
Usagi works, but it has the following issues:
- It is slow (especially when loading large CSVs)
- You need to install dictionaries from Athena
- It requires software installation (Java)
- No four-eye principle
- It doesn’t do translations
- The search results of Usagi are not on par with Athena
To handle this issues, we decided to create our own tool called Keun®.
Methodology
- Svelte (Javascript framework, cybernetically enhanced web apps)
- Svelte-datatable component to handle large CSV files
- Athena API for vocabulary
- Translations through Bergamot: machine translation in your browser
Impact and future directions
Keun® will impact those who map concepts on a daily basis. Since Usagi is a complex piece of software that is not user-friendly, we aimed to make Keun® intuitive. Our goal was to create a tool that is easy to use and intuitive.
Currently, we have a version of Keun® that runs from our Github pages. The next version will use a Firebase backend to support collaboration. In this version, a user will be able to upload a file and assign other users to map that file. This version will greatly improve the feedback cycle.
In the current version, when a user finishes mapping, they need to download the file. To get feedback on the mapping, they will need to send that file to a colleague. This won’t be necessary in the next version.
